Abstract

Rockmass at high in situ stresses has stored high energy. Excavation can increase stress concentration and energy stored in the rock masses to increase risk of rockbursts. Optimization of tunnel cross section is to find a reasonable shape of cross section of tunnel. The circle drainage tunnel is more suitable in mitigating risk of potential rockburst. A tunnel having big cross section can be excavated in two benches to reduce to risk of rockburst. The question is to find a reasonable bench height. Another example is to reduce rockburst risk of TBM tunneling by using pilot tunnel first and then TBM expanding. There needs to be reasonable spacing between two tunnels to reduce rockburst risk. It is easy to generate pillar rockburst when opposite excavation of two working faces at a deep tunnel is close.
