Abstract

The transformation of zinc-coated sheet steel by the user into end products can require painting, forming, and welding. Most paint for construction and appliance applications is applied by high-speed coil coating lines, while for automotive applications vehicles are customarily immersed in tanks containing electrophoretic primer followed by a base coat-clear coat finishing. The performance of zinc and zinc alloy-coated steels with these treatments is described. Room temperature forming of zinc and zinc alloy-coated sheet steels is then described. Resistance spot welding is the dominant joining technique for these sheet steels, particular attention is given to joining of zinc-coated high-strength steels and the phenomenon of liquid metal embrittlement. Laser welding and brazing of these steels are then described.
