Abstract

As one of the most promising strategies in chemical process intensification, membrane reactor (MR) technology has attracted great worldwide researches in the last years, and this subject is still currently undergoing rapid development and innovation. Nevertheless, inorganic MRs, such as silica MRs, have not attained any large-scale commercial applications, which imply there are still a lot of challenges to their practical applications. In contrast, several novel silica membranes and MRs have been developed in recent years. Therefore this chapter addresses research and development of silica MR applications, in which can present high flux of hydrogen over to other gases at high temperatures. Indeed, after discussing about progress in MR technology, the performance of various silica membranes is introduced, followed by evaluation of employing silica membranes for various chemical reactions from both aspects of modeling and experimental works.
