Abstract

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential in biomedical applications, but they are rarely used as pristine, as-synthesized materials. Postsynthetic modification–carrying out chemical transformations or modifications on already-synthesized materials–is commonplace, to enhance properties such as stability, biodistribution, cargo release, and targeting. This chapter gives an overview of postsynthetic modification of MOFs in the context of biomedicine, categorizing the various processes and discussing typical functionality incorporated into MOFs while discussing the effect on varying biomedicinal applications.
