Abstract

This chapter describes the main types of plastics that are based on styrene monomer. It starts by describing where styrene monomer is sourced from. It then explains the ways in which styrene monomer can be polymerized. Properties of the main types of plastics based on styrene are then described, with general-purpose high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, styrene–acrylonitrile polymers, expanded polystyrene, oriented polystyrene, and other styrenic polymers described in subsections. Future developments for this class of polymers are covered in the final subsection.
