Abstract

This contribution synthesizes knowledge about sea cucumbers (Cucumaria frondosa) in Nunavut (Canadian Arctic) with a focus on Qikiqtait (the traditional name of the Belcher Islands) where Inuit have been integrating echinoderms to their diet for centuries. A review of available data on sea cucumber resources across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago is provided, with identification of major gaps in the context of traditional fisheries and potential commercial initiatives. We also present a case study of current research being conducted in Sanikiluaq in collaboration with the local community to generate opportunities for knowledge coproduction, education, and conservation around sea cucumbers and other benthic resources.
