Abstract
Numerous enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods were developed during past decades with the motivation to make the remaining hydrocarbon resources available which are left behind after the primary production. Among all of the developed EOR techniques, the gas injection has been widely practiced and used for the improvement of oil recovery. Various forms of gas injection including CO2, nitrogen, lean gas and reach gas have been injected individually or in combination with water injection in different oil fields. Oil recovery can be improved by gas injection through four major mechanisms namely, (1) viscosity reduction of hydrocarbon phase, (2) reduction of interfacial tension through mass transfer between the displacing and displaced fluids in the reservoir through condensing and vaporing mechanisms, (3) oil swelling, (4) and reservoir pressure maintenance. The aim of this chapter is to review the achievement of various field gas injection experiences and the influencing parameters on the performance of gas injection at the field scale.
