Abstract

The non-operative approach to patients with chronic venous insufficiency includes lifestyle modification, compression, and pharmacologic therapies. Both Hippocrates (460 – 370 BC) and Aurelius Celsus (25 BC - AD14) utilized compression in their treatment of venous disease. Although compression therapy is one of the oldest treatment modalities for patients with venous disorders it was only recently that quantitative parameters of compression were established. The aim of this chapter is to provide details on the effects of compression therapy on venous hemodynamics and mechanism by which compression therapy can be efficiently used in the treatment of venous ulcers.
