Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the frequent association between mineral deposits and stromatolites, and discusses whether stromatolite-building organisms play some role in mineralization. The association of stromatolites and other fossil structures with mineral deposits is an evidence for a possible role of biological activity in mineral formation. In the environment, there are several examples of biological processes that contribute, directly or indirectly, to the fixation of mineral elements and there is evidence that analogous processes may have operated during the genesis of some mineral deposits in the past. Given an adequate supply of metals or other valuable elements and the appropriate conditions, stromatolite formation during sedimentation can be accompanied by the accumulation of these elements to form ore deposits.
