Abstract

The chapter discusses Nessus' include files implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, followed by Nessus' include files implementation of Windows-related hotfix and service pack verification. The chapter also discusses how a similar kind of hotfix and service pack verification can be done for different UNIX flavors by utilizing the relevant include files. Nessus' include files allow users to write more than just banner comparison or service detection tests; they also allow users to easily utilize Windows' internal functions to determine whether a certain Windows service pack or hotfix is installed on a remote machine or a certain UNIX patch is installed. Nessus can connect to a remote UNIX host that supports Secure Shell (SSH). Currently, AIX, Debian, Fedora, FreeBSD, Geneto, HP-UNIX, Mandrake, Red Hat, Solarfis, and SuSE are some of the operating systems that conducted tests that verify whether a remote host contains an appropriate path for vulnerability.
