Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter describes that the Coal Research and Development is undertaken principally by the NCB at the Mining Research and Development Establishment (MRDE) at Bretby in Staffordshire; at the Coal Research Establishment, Stoke Orchard in Gloucestershire; at its subsidiary BCURA Limited at Leatherhead; and under contract by the Institute of Occupational Medicine. The United Kingdom has also been nominated by the International Energy Agency to take the lead in coal research and development (R & D). The Mining Research and Development organization is mainly concerned with coal mining and preparation. R and D relating to the manufacture of metallurgical coke is undertaken by the NCB as a producer of coal. The NCB Annual Reports and Accounts provide data and commentary on R and D effort in the NCB and its subsidiaries.
