Abstract

Due to the temperature sensitivity of LIB cells, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) is significant for the efficiency, dependability, and security of electric vehicles. Liquid coolant-based BTMS is the most commonly utilized scheme considering its high heat transfer efficiency in cooling or heating. This chapter mainly emphasizes the liquid coolant-based battery thermal management strategies and system design from the aspects of modeling and experiments. Firstly, a comprehensive summary of the liquid coolant-based system is analyzed in terms of direct and indirect cooling/heating modes for the prismatic, pouch, and cylindrical batteries. Moreover, liquid channel configuration and heat transfer coolant selection are also discussed to enhance the overall thermal performance. Furthermore, based on the principle of liquid-gas phase change, the heat pipe-based BTMS is analyzed. To further enhance heat transfer and economic efficiency, liquid coolant-based thermal management strategies and optimization are discussed.
