Abstract

Clove, the dried flowering bud of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry. (Myrtaceae) is widely used as a spice all over the world for its strong aromatic smell and as a crude drug in many traditional medicine formulations. Clove oil, rich in eugenol and β-caryophyllene, is used as a popular remedy for toothache for its potent antiseptic and analgesic activities. The extracts from clove and oil also have strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Various health-promoting and other pharmacological activities are reported for the extracts, oils, and compounds obtained from cloves. This chapter discusses these activities with a special focus on antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, analgesic, and antidiabetic activities.
