Abstract

Electrochemistry, as the name implies, is the branch of chemistry which deals with the chemistry of electrical and chemical energy. A device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy or vice versa is an electrochemical cell, and it can be categorized in galvanic cell and electrolytic cell. This chapter deals with the construction of cells and chemistry underlying these cells, salt bridge, cell reaction, cell potential (oxidation and reduction potential) along with their examples. Standard hydrogen electrode, chosen as a standard for the determination of reduction potentials of all other cells and how a reactivity series has been formed along with application of standard potentials like prediction of oxidizing or reducing agent, determination of cell electromotive force, and spontaneity of the reaction, and Nernst equation for the half-cell and complete cell are also discussed. Various applications of electrochemistry such as determination of dissociation constant, potentiometric titrations, determination of thermodynamic quantities have also been taken up in this chapter.
