Abstract

Terpenoids are the largest class of secondary metabolites responsible for the characteristic aroma of plants, and are also involved in plant defense and environmental interaction (attraction of pollinators) and play physiological and ecological roles. Some plant hormones (abscisic acid, GAs, cytokinins, and strigolactones) made up of terpenoids play key roles in the growth and development of plants. There are a diverse number of terpenoids present in plants due to the number of terpene synthases, multiple product formation by terpene synthase, and utilization of different substrates. Biosynthesis of terpenoids is regulated through environmental cues and several investigations have confirmed that terpene synthase activities are often controlled at the level of gene transcription by several transcription factors (TFs). In this chapter we highlight the roles and aspects of different TFs in the biosynthesis of terpenoids of plants.
