Abstract

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) EQ56:2013 (Recommended Practice for a Medical Equipment Management Program) and ANSI/AAMI EQ89:2015 (Guidance for the Use of Medical Equipment Maintenance Strategies and Procedures) are two consensus standards that have been developed by the AAMI Medical Equipment Management Committee to assist healthcare organizations in meeting accreditation requirements associated with their medical equipment management programs. These requirements are enforced by The Joint Commission (TJC) and other accreditation agencies, such as Hospital Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV). They are derived from Conditions of Participation requirements published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This chapter describes the general contents of EQ56 and EQ89. It describes the different sections that are found in each document and the rationale for some of the requirements found in each. Also discussed is how the current revision of EQ56 differs from prior editions.
