Abstract

Several phytoplasma diseases have been reported in citrus from Asian countries and the associated phytoplasma groups or species have been studied over the last decades. Witches' broom disease of lime (WBDL) associated with presence of “Candidatus Phytoplasma aurantifolia” is the most severe citrus phytoplasma disease. WBDL has been reported in Oman, United Arab Emirates, Iran, and India in acid lime, bakraee, grapefruit, mandarin and related hybrids, citron, limequat, sweet orange, and alemow trees. In addition to 16SrII-B, other phytoplasma groups and subgroups including 16SrII-C, 16SrII-A, 16SrI (‘Ca. P. asteris’), 16SrVI (‘Ca. P. trifolii’), 16SrXIV (‘Ca. P. cynodontis’), and 16SrIX have been reported to be associated with citrus crops showing phytoplasma-like symptoms in Asia. In this chapter, we have provided the updates on occurrence, distribution, identification, transmission, genetic diversity, and management of witches' broom disease of acid lime and citrus crops in Asian countries are provided.
