Abstract

The term “sex chromatin,― denotes a body in the nuclei of cells, which shows a special relationship to the sex of the organism from which the cell originated. The sex-chromatin body is present in the nucleus only during interphase and disappears during mitosis. The term “sex-chromatin― had been used to describe the part of the sex chromosomes, which acted as a sex differentiator in development. The sex-chromatin test provides a simple and indispensable aid in the diagnosis of patients with abnormalities of the sex chromosomes. The technique has made it possible to screen large populations and obtain estimates regarding the incidence of these abnormalities. The origin of the sex chromatin and its relation to the sex chromosomes has given rise to speculations, which are stimulating experimental work, as to the way in which the X-chromosome functions, in sex determination and in general.
