Abstract

Biochar is a kind of carbon-rich, highly aromatic and stable solid material produced by pyrolysis of biomass under an oxygen-limited environment. As a new multifunctional material, biochar has become a hot topic in many subjects due to its porous structure, high cation exchange capacity, and excellent ecological and environmental effects. The application of biochar to soil is also able to improve soil properties and plant growth. This chapter provides an updated review of the production and characteristics of biochar and its usage in soil improvement, carbon sequestration, and environmental remediation of contaminants. The prospect and future directions of biochar application are also discussed.
