Abstract

Elderly individuals appear to be at high risk for cognitive impairments due to compromised physiology. Nutritional approach is one of the most explored strategies to prevent or delay the onset of many untoward cognitive dysfunctions among aging populations. Recent studies show that multinutrient approaches such as Mediterranean diet (MeDi) are more promising than the effect mainly focused on individual nutrient/bioactive ingredient in health promotions. Plenty of reviews in the literature are available which describe the studies on MeDi and its beneficial effects with regard to many age-induced complications including cardiovascular and hyperglycemia problems; however, the association between MeDi and cognitive functions has been very occasionally explored. Since no effective treatment to modify the courses of cognitive impairments, the prevention or slowing down their prevalence by available resources is an urgent priority. This chapter aims to provide an update on recent findings concerning the impact of MeDi on cognitive functions in aging.
