Abstract

This chapter presents an introduction to electrical units and circuits. It discusses the electrical units of power and measurement of current and voltage. An instrument that indicates the current in a circuit is called an ammeter. The chapter also discusses the commercial unit of electrical energy. The joule or watt-second as a unit of energy is too small for everyday use and a larger unit, the kilowatt-hour, is used. This is the unit of electricity referred to on electricity bills. The chapter illustrates the effect of length on the resistance of a piece of wire, effect of the cross-sectional area of a wire on its resistance, and effect of temperature on resistance. It has been shown that a piece of wire could be used to find the relationship between the current through it and the potential difference across it.
