Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of international monetary relations. With the growth of foreign trade a corresponding development has occurred in the institutions and international arrangements that are necessary to finance that trade. Since the Second World War, the importance of having effective means of supplying ample financial resources has been realized and the practical results of negotiation are evident in the many international bodies that have been established. International Monetary Policy by W. M. Scammell, 2nd edition, covers a wide field, the balance of payments, exchange rates, systems of adjustment, Bretton Woods, the World Bank, regional clearing systems, the pattern of world payments, and anti-cyclical plans that give information on these aspects of international monetary problems. A survey of all aspects of international monetary economics starting from the basic reasons for foreign trade and continuing through payment problems to questions of international liquidity and proposals for reform is contained in L. B. Yeager, International Monetary Relations: theory, history, policy.
