Abstract

Capitalizing on the plasticity of the brain, interventions that promote physical activity in older adults have led to an enhancement of fitness and cognitive health. The present chapter examines the effects of physical activity, with or without music, and the impacts of dance on cognitive performances and brain health in healthy older adults. The use of dance/movement therapy (D/MT) to promote successful aging is also discussed. Based on the most recent evidence, dance as an intervention for older adults could help improve and maintain cognition and the cognitive enhancement and maintenance effect could be related to structural brain changes. However, studies in the field remain limited in number and dance interventions greatly vary among them. Therefore further studies are needed to confirm the positive effects of dance and D/MT and to identify the mechanisms by which these activities can counteract, to some extent, age-related changes on health and cognition.
