Abstract

The formation of (hetero)aryl–(hetero)aryl bonds constitutes one of the most active research areas in modern organic synthesis because of the prevalence of the biaryl motif in natural products, numerous bioactive compounds and functional materials. The recently developed Pd‐catalyzed (hetero)aryl–(hetero)aryl bond formation via double C–H activation processes, which employs non‐preactivated arenes as both coupling partners, represents a highly attractive alternative to the traditional Pd‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions. In this chapter, we will present the recent progress toward Pd‐catalyzed oxidative C–H/C–H cross‐coupling reactions between two simple arenes, between a directing‐group‐containing arene and an arene, between a heteroarene and an arene and between two heteroarenes.
