Abstract

• Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) may be the result of BPH• The symptoms of BPH can be divided in obstructive and irritative symptoms• More important than a single determination of symptoms is the dynamic process of symptom changes• The correlation between the extent of symptoms and the prostatic volume or the grade of obstruction is weak• Symptom quantification with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) helps to determine the severity of the disease, detects symptom progression and documents response to therapy• With the IPSS the impact of urinary symptoms on quality of life can also be evaluated.
