Abstract
This chapter presents the implementation of a dynamic data center using Microsoft Virtualization and System Center. Microsoft System Center is a suite of tools that builds upon the five core components, which include System Center Configuration Manager R2, also known as ConfigMan, System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), System Center Data Protection Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, and System Center Essentials. One of the technologies that are fairly widespread in most industries for the creation of dynamic datacenter is published applications. Publishing an application to remote users consists of a fairly complex and sometimes large infrastructure; this can be even larger depending on the applications published. Common among servers, but even more so among published application environments, is the evolution from its initial design to what it is today such as, a farm that was initially designed to publish application “X” 5 years ago may now publish application “Z,” and not even publish application “X” anymore. The major vendors of application publishing software provide tools and guides that help identify the true usage of the application servers.
