Abstract
Social cognition has emerged as an important construct in both the understanding of schizophrenia and its treatment. In this chapter, the definitions, domains, and measurement of social cognition in schizophrenia are discussed. Deficits and biases in the areas of emotion/social perception, theory of mind, and attributional style are reviewed, as well as general approaches to remediating these impairments. Social cognitive interventions are generally classified as targeted, comprehensive, or broad-based depending on what constructs are the focus of treatment and the methods used to bring about change. This chapter reviews research studies that attempt to remediate social cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and is followed by a discussion of current issues and concerns as this area of study moves forward.
