Abstract

This chapter discusses unsaturated organophosphorus acids and their derivatives. The simplest unsaturated phosphonic acid is vinylphosphonic acid, which is the phosphorus analog of acrylic acid. Vinylphosphonic acid has been prepared recently by the hydrolysis of its acid chloride. Substituted vinylphosphonic acids have been obtained by the thermal dehydrohalogenation of the corresponding halogenated phosphonic acids, by the dehydration of α-hydroxyphosphonic acids, and also by the hydrolysis of the acid chlorides of unsaturated phosphonic acids. There are many diverse methods of synthesizing the acid chlorides of unsaturated phosphonic and phosphonothionic acids. One of the main methods of obtaining acid chlorides of unsaturated organophosphorus acids is the addition of phosphorus pentachloride to various unsaturated compounds, followed by the treatment of the adducts with sulfur dioxide, phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorus pentasulfide, hydrogen sulfide, or phosphorus and sulfur. These acid chlorides are usually colorless and transparent liquids that are slowly hydrolyzed in the air and are soluble in many organic solvents. These are purified by distillation in vacuo .
