Abstract

This chapter highlights the experimental techniques, theories, and present state of knowledge in the field of thermal degradation of high polymers. It also describes the techniques used for the characterization of volatile products and non-volatile polymeric residues and for the determination of the rate of volatilization and heat evolved during pyrolysis. The measurement of the rate of weight loss and of the heat of reaction allows the evaluation of the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the reaction. The chapter discusses the theoretical developments related to these methods and reviews some of the most significant results published in the literature for normal polymers. It also illustrates the basic principles leading to the improvement of the thermal stability of high polymers and the main characteristics of some important thermostable polymers. Copolymers and polymer blends, which are becoming more and more important in the elaboration of new materials, are considered together and their behavior is related by a large number of common general principles.
