Abstract
Next-generation microbial cell factories with enhanced performance are generated by the synergistic use of technological advances in the field of metabolic engineering, systems biology, and synthetic biology along with different omics platforms. By going beyond the suboptimal operational scale, overcoming metabolic bottlenecks, altering and creating novel metabolic circuits, bioengineers have opened avenues to create unique physiological environments in microbial strains to produce novel bioproducts; address issues such as environmental pollution, sustainable food supply; and tackle new and emerging diseases. By reducing the cost and increasing the sophistication of investigational tools, research and development in the field of metabolic engineering is playing an important role for the generation of chemicals and processes important in addressing various biotechnology challenges. In this chapter, different tools of metabolic engineering and various chemicals and bioproducts thereof are presented.
