Abstract

This chapter gives a general overview of the contents of this book. ‘Slender structures’ and ‘axial flow’ are defined, as well as fluid-structure interactions, flow-induced vibrations and instabilities. The different classifications of flow-induced vibrations are discussed. Fluid-structure interactions involving slender structures and axial flow are illustrated by three typical examples from engineering practice. The scope and special emphasis of this book are discussed, followed by a description of the content of each chapter of the book, as well as the contents of Volume 2.
