Abstract
This chapter introduces the basic knowledge of optical fiber, submarine optical cable, and submarine optical cable system, including the structure, transmission characteristics, classification of optical fiber, and structure, type and characteristics of submarine optical cable, and the composition and networking of submarine optical cable system. It traces the historical process of invention and development from the beginning of the submarine telegraph cable to the seabed coaxial communication cable, and the submarine optical cable communication.
