Abstract

This is the introduction chapter to the book, which focuses on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECtHR). The work links philosophical concepts of what it means to be a person to the legal understanding given to it by the European human rights legal system as manifested at the ECtHR. The analysis in the book is arranged around themes evinced from the authors interpretations of the courts jurisprudence on private life into personal autonomy, identity and integrity and is divided into four parts: (1) personal freedom and human rights law (2) privacy and personal autonomy (3) personal identity (4) bodily and moral integrity.Keywords: bodily integrity; ECtHR; European human rights legal system; human rights law; moral integrity; personal autonomy; personal freedom; personal identity; philosophical concepts; privacy
