Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to computers. The computer is coming to dominate contemporary life in the same way as the steam engine ruled the lives of our early-Victorian ancestors. The present age has already been defined as a cybernetic revolution that has considerable analogies with the nineteenth century industrial revolution. Computers are also used extensively for local and central government purposes such as rate accounting, national insurance records, and census analysis. There is a growing use of computers for the control of traffic lights and other uses in transport include airline seat reservation, air traffic control, motorway and bridge design, and, in some countries, railway seat reservations. The computer is especially useful for technical and scientific work as it eliminates the drudgery of complex calculations. In fact, many computations that would have never been attempted previously are now performed with ease with the aid of the computer.
