Abstract
The first task of a new study of the canon is to situate itself in the history of this study. It is so long that an overview must necessarily be limited to the most important stages. A distinction is made between the rise of the canon issue in the biblical period to the closure of the canon and the development in the post-canonical period. The issue of the canon became more clearly visible in the rediscovery of the book of Moses that triggered King Josiah?s reforms. During the post-biblical period, the canon issue is characterised by a lengthy stability within the faith community and its tradition, accompanied by a primitive view on the origin of the canon: it was to have coincided with the time the Scriptures were penned, and was to have become authoritative in a single act without interim phases or intermediaries.Keywords: biblical canon; biblical period; faith community; King Josiah?s reforms; post-canonical period
