Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released from human activities are responsible for the unprecedented increase in global temperature in recent decades. Burning fossil fuels in the end-use sectors releases the majority of GHG emissions, and global warming, as well as climate change, is among the main consequences of nonrenewable fuels combustion. Furthermore, fossil fuel reservoirs are depleted day by day, and the world will run out of fossil fuels in the coming years. To cope with these dilemmas, various solutions such as using alternative fuels, fuel consumption optimization, and exhaust gas recirculation have been proposed. This chapter highlights multiple aspects of the fossil fuel crisis and global warming and reviews the characteristics of ultralean flameless combustion as a superior technology for fuel consumption reduction and emissions mitigation.
