Abstract

Abstract Chapter 1 covers the topics of elastic and inelastic fast neutron scatter, fast neutron moderation to thermal neutrons, determination of neutron moderator thickness, and reduction of gamma noise by the choice of moderator material. Compact sources of fast neutrons, the deuteron-deuteron (DD) and deuteron-triton (DT) fusion generators, are presented here. In particular, the yield and angular distribution of the fast neutrons emitted from the ion beam target of the generator are derived. Finally, the nuclear-resonant fluorescence (NRF) detection of isotopes of interest in gamma or fast neutron interrogated targets is discussed, and an improvised explosives detection (IED) system is presented.
