Abstract

In the 1970s, the public’s need for Japanese herbal medicine increased, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare was flooded with applications for Japanese herbal extracts as OTC drugs. In 1975, the ministry of Health issued the guidebook of the approval standards for Kampo products for 210 prescriptions. But, although Kampo has already been partially incorporated into the healthcare system, this does not mean that clinical research is not being conducted or that evidence-based medicine (EBM) is being taken lightly.
