Abstract

A brief review is given of a new perspective on fluid transport by mesoscale motions in strongly inhomogeneous flows. This perspective draws on results from dynamical systems theory and has been stimulated by recent observations of the Gulf Stream and by laboratory experiments on meandering jets. It generally presumes that the flow is dominated by relatively simple coherent structures, and involves the detailed analysis of the kinematics of fluid exchange between flow regimes.
