Abstract

We study numerically the quantum dynamics of an atom in a standing laser wave in the case when the corresponding classical system exhibits chaotic diffusion in configuration space. In contrast with the diffusive classical dynamics, the quantum motion of the atoms is shown to be ballistic. We also demonstrate that the diffusive dynamics in the quantum case can be recovered by introducing a weak randomness in the system.
