Abstract

This paper investigates chaotic oscillation in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) power system with excitation limits. The un-deterministic oscillation is troublesome for power system operation and planning. So a nonlinear backstepping controller is designed to suppress chaotic motion and assist to preserve the stable operation of the power system. The advantages of this method are, it introduces an efficient technique for selecting a proper controller for controlling chaos and there are no derivatives in controller, so the controller is easy to implement. The effectiveness and robustness of the controller against parameter change as well as outside disturbances are demonstrated by the results of numerical simulation.
