Abstract

We address the problem of the chaotic transport of particles in an asymmetric periodic ratchet potential. We briefly discuss the transport of Brownian particles far from equilibrium and consider in detail the limiting case of vanishing thermal noise. In this deterministic limit, the inertial term in the equation of motion plays a crucial role, since the dynamics can become chaotic and modify the transport properties. We discuss the dynamical origin of current reversals in ratchets and possible applications.
