Abstract

1. The active phase of the flood (freshet) wave singled out by means of the threshold criterionqcr is the region of determination of the dominant discharge. 2. The proposed form of the criterionD is based exclusively on hydrologic characteristics, does not contain local elements, and in connection with this allows geographic generalization and mapping. 3. Dominant discharges can be determined by two methods: from the characteristics of a separately taken flood (freshet), in particular, on the basis of a typical normal annual runoff hydrograph by means of the criterionDmax; as a result of an analysis of the long-term hydrograph of the maximum discharges or their frequency; in this case the dominant flood (freshet) and, as elements of its active phase, the long-termdominant and floodplain-forming discharges are established. 4. Thechannel-transforming discharge is established in conformity with the maximum possible flood and freshet discharges.
