Abstract

This talk describes a set of experiments designed to improve the quality of a channel vocoder. Initial experiments indicated that a spectrally flattened synthesizer with 29 equally spaced channels covering a band of 3600 Hz gave good spectral fidelity; however, the essentially zero phase of the excitation caused the usual “buzziness.” Several methods will be described whereby quality is improved by manipulating the phase of the excitation. These include both fixed frequency dependent phase differences plus dynamic phase differences generated by a linear predictive vocoder. [Work sponsored by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.]
