Abstract
An important article by Cheng et al. (1) in this issue of the Biophysical Journal provides quantitative new insights into how physiologically and biochemically significant solvent additives alter the stability of folded proteins and macromolecular complexes, as well as regulate the osmotic balance of bacterial cells under various growth conditions. This article adds a new chapter to the continuing research efforts of the Record laboratory to provide data sets of thermodynamic parameters that quantitate the effects of small molecule perturbants of the solvent environment on the stability of folded proteins and protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes.
