Abstract

Catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) carry heavy implications, including increased morbidity and mortality, increased length of stay, and a financial burden to the family and hospital. Despite using evidence based practice for insertion and maintenance, the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) was not able to obtain a zero CRBSI rate. Practice guidelines for central line access were not consistent with those in other similar units.
