Abstract

This paper is a transcription of the third in a series of talks Mr. Compton gave last January to the morning assembly with which each school day opens at Phillips Exeter Academy. Although he was addressing himself specifically and point edly to a group of college-bound students and their teachers in an independent school, the challenges he offered can, with the change of only a few words here and there, be made applicable to secondary school students and teachers everywhere. All three talks were pub lished as a Faculty Paper by the Academy, which has granted us permission to reprint this essay.
