Abstract

The current view that gender roles are culturally and socially determined rather than biologically inherent suggests that language, as a transmitter of cultural and social values, plays a significant part in the construction of gender roles. The complex relationship between language and culture clearly indicates the importance of considering language in any serious attempt to describe gender roles. The texts used here consisted of a group of episodes selected by stratified random sampling from each of the following Star Trek series: eight classic Star Trek episodes, three classic Star Trek movies, nine Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes and four Star Trek: Deep Space 9 episodes. Also, that Star Trek's contrived conversation fell relatively close to where face-to-face conversation appears on Dimension 1 supports the notion that these texts from popular culture convey at least stereotypical depictions of language use and can be used for linguistic analysis of gender roles.
