Abstract

This paper focuses on the theme of “loss of authority” as it appears in the management literature. Drawing on longitudinal and descriptive studies, the paper discusses the “loss” to both organizations and the leaders who represent them. The treatment of this theme is contrasted with the perspective provided by a model of cultural change as a process of loss and substitution.
