Abstract
It is almost a truism to say that education is not only about the transfer of knowledge, but also, and perhaps primarily, concerned with developing and altering attitudes. To what extent then is distance education suited to meeting these different tasks? This question is considered here by Wendy Stainton Rogers in the context of psychological theories about attitudes, and of her work with the ‘caring professions’ in the Health and Social Welfare Sector of the Centre for Continuing Education at the Open University.
